Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant and toxicity activities of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol root extracts of Amaranthus spinosus (family: Amaranthaceae). Antioxidant activities of the crude extracts was assessed by means of DPPH free radical scavenging method used ascorbic acid as standard with IC50 value was 43.22 μg/mL. A. spinosus showed ethyl acetate extract demonstrated the good antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 72,08 μg/mL. The n-hexana and methanol extract were not active antioxidant. The Brine shrimp lethality bioassay method was used to determine the cytotoxicity activities. The LC50 values of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were 10.14, 40.23, and 120.18 μg/mL, respectively.
